CALMS: A Guide To Soothing Your Baby was designed specifically for those in care-giving roles to newborns.
Communicate a massive, yet organized, amount of instructional information intended to soothe newborn babies. Readers were assumed to be under stressful reading conditions, and likely to be holding the baby. There was high potential for low-light reading conditions, as many upsets occur during night time.
The book starts out with a lay-flat binding and generous margins, allowing one-handed reading to interfere as little as possible with the type. The large serif font with open line spacing allows for ease in reading. Instructional areas have additional white space, are set in a san-serif face for quick differentiation between body copy and steps within processes. Personal stories of the steps in action are set in shaded areas near the end of each section. The CALMS process is “tabbed”, sectioned letter by letter, with the ink bleeding to the edge. This allows the reader to open the book to the proper section for quick reference.
For visual and tactile relatability, the end pages are designed to replicate the soft floral pattern of a baby blanket. The paper used for the cover is soft to the touch, and shows an actual parent in the process of soothing her child.
